Cholesterol plays a vital role in our health & is often confused as the enemy. All types of Cholesterol are not bad for your Health. Here’s how Cholesterol works & what really causes Heart disease.
There are two main types of Cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein (HDL) & low-density lipoprotein (LDL).
Bad Cholesterol
LDL Cholesterol is considered the “bad” Cholesterol, because it contributes to fatty buildups in arteries (atherosclerosis). It narrows the arteries as well as increases the risk for heart attack, stroke & peripheral artery disease.
HDL (good) Cholesterol
HDL Cholesterol is considered as the “good” Cholesterol. HDL acts as a scavenger, carrying LDL (bad) Cholesterol away from the arteries & back to the liver. A healthy HDL cholesterol level may protect against heart attack & stroke.
Prevention
- Lifestyle & diet changes are the main ways to prevent or lower high LDL.
- Regular aerobic activity & maintain a healthy weight.
In some cases, if those lifestyle changes are not enough, your physician may suggest a Cholesterol lowering medication.
Remember, knowledge is the first step. Avoid taking any medication without doctor’s advice. If you don’t know your Cholesterol levels, get tested. That will give you & your physician a starting point for lifestyle changes & medications if needed.
So adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle, and do it with friends & family no matter their ages. There’s no time like the present to prevent Heart disease.
